Our Philosophy

Giolekas Sports and Family Chiropractic's treatment goal is to return patients to their normal activities of daily living as soon as possible. The office philosophy places an emphasis on the patient playing an active role in their recovery. The body has a natural ability to heal itself, however the patient needs to follow the recommendations made by Giolekas Sports and Family Chiropractic in order to attempt to place the body in an optimal position, which then allows the body to heal itself as quickly and effectively as possible. Treatment emphasis is on chiropractic manipulation, in combination with specific exercise protocols, to obtain the best possible outcomes for both short and long term results.

General Chiropractic Information

Chiropractic care has over 100 years of history and is the 3rd largest primary health care profession in the western world, next to Medicine and Dentistry. Chiropractic is the largest alternative healthcare profession in the United States with approximately 10-15% of the American population (30 to 40 million people) having undergone chiropractic treatment.

The use of chiropractic care has been increasing for people of all ages from infants to the elderly. Individuals seek chiropractic care for conditions including neck pain, back pain, headaches, and sprains/strains to name a few. People are drawn to chiropractic care since it is a natural approach to health care.

Chiropractic is a health care practice that stresses the natural ability of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. Chiropractic treatment focuses on treating the whole person and not necessarily treating an isolated symptom.

This is done by identifying areas of dysfunction involving the joints, muscles, ligaments and nerves, which can adversely effect the nervous system. By correcting these areas of dysfunction it places the whole body in an optimal position to then heal itself.

This website is designed to provide individuals with information regarding general conditions and the chiropractic services provided by Giolekas Sports and Family Chiropractic.

What kinds of issues can be addressed through chiropractic care?

Athletic Injuries

Golf and Low Back Pain

Hitting the links may coincide with an annoying problem that takes away from the fun of the game. That problem is back pain. It is documented that 80 % of Americans will suffer from back pain at some point in their lifetime and that one in three Americans are currently experiencing back pain. These figures may be even higher when strictly referring to the golfing population.

Whether you are a professional, amateur or weekend golfer you are susceptible to back pain. The golf swing in general produces a great deal of stress on the back. Compressive forces on the back during a golf swing can be approximately eight times your body weight. In comparison, running increases the compressive load on your back by four to seven times your body weight.

There are two areas of the golf swing that can be especially damaging to the back. These areas are the backswing and the finish. The backswing causes stress on the back from the rotation that occurs in the upper body (shoulders) in relation to the lower body (pelvis). The greater the rotational difference (i.e. a large shoulder turn with minimal pelvic rotation) the greater the stress on the muscles, ligaments, joints and discs in the back.

The finish of the golf swing can be compromising if a reverse C position is obtained. The reverse C position refers to the position achieved by the low back upon finish of the golf swing. This reverse C also puts an increased stress on the structures of the low back including muscles, ligaments and especially discs and joints.

Chiropractic care can be a very effective treatment for those individuals suffering from low back pain.

Dr. Giolekas is a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician who has undergone specific training in identifying and treating golf related injuries. He can examine you to determine areas of spinal misalignment, muscular weakness and muscular tightness that may not only be causing low back pain, but hindering the golf swing as well. His treatment program may include prescribing specific exercises to help to increase low back strength, low back endurance and improve overall body flexibility.

By properly identifying and treating the cause of the low back pain, people can return to playing golf with decreased pain which in turn leads to lower scores and brings the fun back to the game.

Acute Injuries

Car Accidents

Car accidents even at low speeds can result in significant injuries to the body. The quick jolt of a car accident impact can cause injuries to ligaments, spasms to muscles, misalignments of spinal joints, and injuries to the nerves. When this occurs, automobile occupants may experience symptoms including headaches, neck pain, back pain, pain into the arms or legs, numbness, dizziness and nausea. Due to the shock and/or adrenaline that people experience following a car accident, symptoms of pain may not begin until several days following the car accident. Chiropractic care can be an effective means of treating injuries resulting from car accidents.

Work Related Injuries

Work related injuries could become significant issues to the employee. Not only due to the pain from the sustained injury but also due to the possibility of lost time from work and the financial issue that may follow.

Whether the injury occurs due to a slip and fall, lifting injury or other trauma, symptoms of pain may be significant. The treating chiropractic physician will perform a thorough examination, provide a diagnosis and initiate a treatment plan that will decrease the employee's pain and allow them to return to their work duties as soon as possible. In the state of Massachusetts, employees who are injured at work are allowed to seek care of a doctor of their choice. Our office is experienced with submitting pre-authorizations required for work related injuries.

Pregnancy and Low Back Pain

Many women, due to the physiological and physical changes that occur with pregnancy, experience neck pain, mid back pain, low back pain, and at times leg pain or sciatica. Chiropractic treatment can be a very safe and effective means for treating these symptoms.

With pregnancy, ligaments become loose, muscles become tight, and joints become misaligned, which all can produce pain.

In order to properly treat back pain associated with pregnancy, all of the above issues should be addressed. Stretching techniques should be used to decrease muscle tightness, gentle chiropractic adjustments are used to promote proper joint alignment, and non-stressful strengthening exercises can be used to improve muscular strength and compensate for ligament laxity.

Techniques including gentle chiropractic adjustments, along with stretching and strengthening techniques are used for treatment of pregnancy related back pain. At times warm packs or cold packs may also be used to help decrease muscular spasm.

In addition, a specific table designed for the treatment of pregnant females is used. This table allows a woman to lay face down with the belly portion of the table lower, relieving the low back of the stress associated with the weight gain of pregnancy.

The treating chiropractic physician will work with your obstetrics/gynecological physician to determine if you are a good candidate for chiropractic care.

Posture Analysis

Today most of the population suffers from some sort of poor posture or postural alteration. This will only become more prevalent due to the use of smartphones, tablets, laptops and long days at the computer. Our doctors can perform an analysis of your general posture. We can evaluate issues including curvatures of the spine, along with alterations in shoulder height, hip height, hip rotation, leg length inequalities and head positioning.

Posture evaluation involves visually observing the patient in a standing and sitting position. In addition, musculature including the neck, back and hip regions will be evaluated for tightness and/or weakness. Joints of the spine will be assessed for proper motion.

If postural alterations are evident, treatment including chiropractic adjustments, stretching exercises and strengthening exercises may be recommended. In addition, recommendations regarding maintaining proper posture when performing daily activities may be indicated.

Improving Athletic Performance

Has your athletic performance decreased? Have you hit a wall in your training? Are you injured frequently?

People who answer yes to any of the above questions may be suffering from issues including spinal misalignments and muscular imbalances, such as muscular tightness and/or muscular weakness, in specific muscle groups.

The treating chiropractic physician can perform an evaluation to identify areas of muscular or joint dysfunction that can be hindering athletic performance. Once these areas of dysfunction are identified, the treating chiropractor can prescribe specific stretching and strengthening exercises to address specific areas of muscular tightness or weakness. In addition, chiropractic adjustments can be performed to promote proper functioning of the spinal joints or joints of the extremities.

By placing the body in a state where muscle and joints are functioning at their optimal level, this allows individuals to train more efficiently and effectively for a longer period of time. This in turn can have a direct effect on increased athletic performance.

Initial Visit

What can you expect from your first visit?

Upon first entering the office, a prospective patient will need to complete a confidential case history/patient intake form noting their current medical complaints and past medical history. (This can also be filled out online.) Once completed, the treating chiropractic physician will review this information with the individual to obtain an understanding of their health status. The treating chiropractic physician will then explain general concepts of chiropractic treatment, allowing the prospective patient to have a basic understanding of chiropractic care.

A physical examination will then be performed to evaluate the patient's complaints. The treating chiropractic physician will review the examination findings with the individual, explain how these findings are contributing to the individual's complaints, and propose a treatment plan.

Depending on the diagnosed condition, along with approval by the individual, treatment may be initiated on the first visit.
